Splendor is a compact gem-collecting game: take tokens, buy cards, and build an engine that lets you afford bigger cards and attract noble patrons. Games run about half an hour, the rules are minimal, and the weighty gem tokens feel satisfying in hand. It plays well at two players as well as four, which makes it a reliable choice for couples and small groups. The trade-off is theme — the Renaissance merchant setting is light, and the game is really an abstract puzzle dressed up in gemstones.
